Introduction to The Foodland Chronicles

How can the Foodland Chronicles Help You?
My goal is that my experience in making the journey through Foodland toward what I am calling an American Mediterranean diet and lifestyle will make it a bit easier for you in your own journey. If you’ve been reading the Dr. Grandma’s newsletter for very long, you have probably figured out that I have a certain amount of passion for nutrition. I follow the news coming out of Foodland carefully, and share my reactions with you. For example,….. Oh My Goodness! You could have scraped me off the ceiling when The American Heart Association made their “cut back on sugar guideline announcement”.
Then within hours, the big (we’re talking BIG) profit makers of sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup, blasted them for going away from the old tainted arguments that sugar can be part of a good diet. I’m really sick, and of course tired, of the nutrition as usual statements. Yes, it is true that sugar can fit into a balanced healthy diet; the super snag is, ‘how much?’ People are not having a couple of teaspoons of sugar a day. It is partially not their fault; so many people just don’t know that they are being bombarded with it. And I believe that they don’t really understand that replacing whole healthy nutrient-filled food with empty calorie sugar is not helping them stay healthy. This is not really what I want to write about right now, but we’ll discuss this issue more fully in the future. The point is that I’ve never lost my love of public health nutrition. I really want to do what I can to help the public improve their health. I’m hoping that this blog can help reach people who ‘just don’t know how to do it’ – improve their health, that is. So my goal is for this blog to be a place to get ideas on how to move away from the clever traps of Foodland -- too many processed foods, where you have little or no control of the ingredients – very profitable for the big food interests, but for you? We can all control our choices from the counters of Foodland toward eating a diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, less animal protein, low fat dairy and improved fat choices. As related to nutrition, I guess my overarching goal is to help people take the practical steps toward American Mediterranean-style eating. I’ll help you with menus, recipes, pantry-stocking issues, shopping issues, cooking hints, and just old-fashioned chat.
